Tips to buy a car in New Zealand
check the oil - if the oil is black and thick it's a sign that nobody changed the oil in a while and cared for the car. Fresh oil looks pretty light and thin.
check the cooling water - you have to check it directly at the radiator, but only if the motor is cold. It has to be full to the brim and green or red in color. The red or green color means there is cooling agent in the water. A good sign.
Take a bottle of water with you to test the radiator. If you you have fill in the whole bottle it's a bad sign. Nobody checkd the cooling water for a while.
If something is wrong with the system -cooling water radiator zylinder head- keep away from that car. The repair is terribly expensive.
Get your car checkt by an independent garage or by the AA before you buy it. It is about NZ$150.
Tyre - check if there is still enough profile on it especially on the inside of the tyre
Wof ( TUEV) - cars which are older than 6 years have to get a new wof every 6 month. Check how much wof the car has got. You see the sticker on the left hand side of the top of the windscreen, standing infront of the car. The exact date is on the inside of the sticker.
Rego - the sticker is placed on the right hand side of the windscreen at the bottom, standing infront of the car. Without wof you dont get rego.
RUC - road user charges applies to diesel vehicles. Make sure there are still enough kms on it. If not you have to pay for it all.
car jam check - do a so called lemon check, see if there is no money owing on the car.
If you see - NO MONEY OWING- , it's all good. If not dont buy the car. It can get expensive.
Everything about documents or paperwork about the car is done at the postoffice or online.
If you don't have a New Zealand drivers license you can't do it online.
in the end of the day just listen to your gut feeling. If something doen't feel good don't buy
